Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
While Killer Frost is a decent part of what’s keeping this particular sub-arc together, there’s more attention paid to what’s going on behind the scenes of her attack on Leningrad. Marguerite Bennett may be creating arcs in a particular way but more often than not it doesn’t feel like they’re distinct pieces at this point compared to before. And that’s fine as what counts is the story itself and she’s definitely having fun here. And that is well complemented with what Laura Braga brings to the page having worked on this series for so long. There’s a sense of freedom to the designs that really works well, particularly with some of the angles used and some fun layouts. I’ve really enjoyed her character designs in the last couple of years on this book and her take on Faora certainly delights.

This installment is a bit chaotic in some ways with what it wants to get done before moving to the more personal moment. Frost’s attack on Leningrad is certainly a big move that puts pressure on the heroes inside to defend it, even with the circus/forces that they have at hand, but it goes to its own whole weird level after we get a bit more time between Faora and Strange. She’s certainly made him a plaything to achieve her own goals, but sending him out to attack astride a group of oversized octopi? Well, it’s certainly a great moment visually and the puns from Harley are spot on. This also plays well into the action among the others, especially with Lois getting some decent moments and having some quality time with Supergirl along the way.

Where a lot of time is spent here is with Faora coming to the forefront and drawing Kara into her orbit. The two end up in a bit of a flying chase where they move so fast that times stands still, allowing for some conversation. Kara’s realization of who she is within the government is a nice moment as it goes back to her Night Witch days and that seems like it takes her by surprise more than the discovery that the two are both from Krypton. Kara’s true origins and connections to Power Girl and Superman are some fertile ground to play with, but I love how Faora provides another twist with their connection. It won’t surprise me if it proves to be true within context of this series but I know my instinct is to not believe it based on other continuities out there. Doing that here would certainly be different and open up some interesting interpersonal elements in their fight(s) to come.

In Summary:
Bombshells moves through another phase of the Leningrad arc and it’s certainly got its moments, notably with Faora and Kara. I’m curious to see how much truth is there as Faora certainly looks to have quite the history within this world and that can lead to a number of different things to surface. Laura Braga gets to do some fun things here with how those two mingle in the sky as well as some really cute panels for Lois as well. But, frankly, the fact that she gets to put Hugo Strange on top of an attack octopus is what really takes the cake and wins the day. There ought to be an award for making that look as good as it does.
