April is a bit of a lull month overall for what’s coming out as there aren’t a lot of really big marquee films as a bunch got squished into March. That’s allowed family fare to move to the top, such as Boss Baby having a good second weekend with just a 48% drop to bring in another $26 million – making just about $90 million in ten days. It has close competition with Beauty and the Beast as it did another $25 million, proving some real strength to the adaptation in terms of allure even if it’s not completely well-received criticailly. The film is moving fast with a $432 million domestic take so far and is closing in on the billion mark worldwide.
Ghost in the Shell and Power Rangers have week weekends in their latest frame with Ghost in the Shell bringing in just $7 million to earn it a fifth place spot, bringing its ten day total to $31.5 million. It at least has a bit more earning power overseas with a $92.8 million take so far, $21 million of which came from China. Power Rangers is faring a bit better as it dipped to $6.2 million but with a $75 million domestic take so far based on a strong initial outing that it couldn’t capitalize on.
On the new side, Smurfs: The Lost Village didn’t have much smurfberry juice as it did just $14 million while Going in Style reminds us once again that senior comedy heist material is hard to pull off as it did just $12.5 million.
One of the few big name films is coming up next week with The Fate of the Furioushitting 4,200 screens while a Gifted expands to 1,000 screens.
