Following up on the previous episode, not something that works in favor of a show like this, we get our two characters stuck in a cave and looking at a bleak end to everything. It’s well done technically with the visual design for it and the impassioned speech out of Nana but it shifts gears to her creating a portal to another world with her sword while giving Number 31 a chance to escape. The emotional side works well as Number 31 plays it for all its worth and Nana delivers it well by naming her only friend Mi, giving us that touch to the “real world” of this series. Since it’s a given what kind of subplot this is it’s not something that’s really strong in a way but it’s all connected well and makes for a decent sequence of events to give some supposed background for Mi that makes her stand out.

In Summary:
The two-part Donuts Arc is an interesting piece as it gives the creative side a chance to stretch and do something a little different but it also rings hollow in a property like this. You do expect more in the way of gags and humor considering what this is but you also like seeing it get serious from time to time. Conceptually, it’s a story that I like and have seen before many times, and the execution is well overall, but it’s just plainly out of place within this work and just doesn’t click well because of it.
