A Betrothed for this Noble Daughter!

What they say:
After a traffic accident, Kazuma Sato’s disappointingly brief life was supposed to be over, but he wakes up to see a beautiful girl before him. She claims to be a goddess, Aqua, and asks if he would like to go to another world and bring only one thing with him. Kazuma decides to bring the goddess herself, and they are transported to a fantasy world filled with adventure, ruled by a demon king. Now Kazuma only wants to live in peace, but Aqua wants to solve many of this world’s problems, and the demon king will only turn a blind eye for so long…

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Kazuma and Aqua are hard at work—arguing over who is at fault for their current situation. I somehow get the feeling that Aqua is still bitter over how Kazuma tried to abandon her in the dungeon during the previous episode. Of course, there’s also the fact that Aqua, Kazuma, Megumin, and the cat Chumosuke, are truly in dire straights. All that money they earned in the dungeon was spent on booze, so now they’re broke again and still in debt.

It is during a very typical—and hilarious—argument between Kazuma and Aqua that Darkness returns, dressed in the traditional outfit of a noble lady. No one recognizes her at first. We soon learn that Darkness has an arranged marriage meeting with Walther-something or other, a noble’s son and the youngest knight in history. Of course, Darkness has no desire to marry this noble. We soon learn exactly what her tastes in men are when she tells Kazuma and Aqua that she needs their help to keep her from being married. I find it funny that her description of the ideal man is a perfect fit for Kazuma.

For the remainder of this episode, we follow Darkness as she tries to make Walther decide not to marry her. Sadly—for her—this doesn’t work out as she intended. It seems that Walther’s initial reason for showing up was to politely decline the marriage, but after Darkness’s frank words, he tells her that she has become interesting. Naturally, this makes Darkness try even harder to make him understand that he isn’t what she wants, which results in Kazuma being roped into her shenanigans.

I really loved how this episode explored Darkness’s mentality. She’s a true masochist. Her entire reason for becoming a knight was specifically so she could fight, be captured by the Devil King, and then be used by the Devil King and his minions until they were finished with her. That said, I’m pretty sure the Devil King and his minions would be too freaked out by her masochism to actually do anything. I mean, a true Devil King relishes in the tortured screams of others, not the pleasure-filled moans that Darkness would be giving him. Thinking on it, that would probably be an interesting meeting.

In Summary:
I continue to be amazed by how entertaining this series is. The expansion on Darkness was a welcome addition to the series, especially since we’ve had so little of her in the last three episodes. While this particular episode wasn’t as funny as the last one, there are still many laugh out loud moments. There’s only one question that remains after watching this episode: How will the events at Darkness’s mansion affect Kazuma’s already low standing among his fellow adventurers?
