The Halloween season often sees plenty of themed movies as one would expect and we’ve had a fair number, though less this year as horror films are more spread out. This weekend was certainly a surprise to many as Boo! A Madea Halloween took the top spot with a $27 million take. Even more surprising is that some theaters weren’t running it as it had just 2,200 screens out of the usual 3,500 mainline run for a widespread release. The film was supposed to run at my local multiplex but they ended up with a Harry Potter marathon over the weekend…
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is getting mediocre reviews at best and it took the second place spot at $23 million, which is better than the $15 million opening weekend for the original. With a $60 million budget it certainly has a ways to go domestically, but it did $31 million overseas. The original film did $80 million domestic and $138 million overseas, which is why a sequel arrived.
Keeping up with Joneses was where I ended up on Friday night looking for some laughs, and there are some forced ones to be had in there, as it did $5.6 million for the weekend. I’ll admit, I’ll see Isla Fisher in anything. And this is as close to a Jon Hamm/Superman Gal Gadot/Wonder Woman teamup as I’m likely to see. With no budget listed, it’s likely to be another comedy flop for the year.
This weekend also saw Ouija: Origin of Evil arriving and doing a $14 million weekend that could add a bit more coin as we get closer to Halloween itself. The film has a $9 million budget and did another $8 million overseas so things will go decently and it’ll likely have a solid second life on home video and broadcast/pay networks. The original film back in 2014 had a $5 million budget and a $20 million opening weekend, going on to make $103 million worldwide by the end. Even if this does half of that it’s still a big win overall.
With Halloween weekend coming up next weekend, it’s usually light on films since people are at parties and other events before the festivities on the Monday. The only film opening wide is Inferno with Tom Hanks from Sony.
