case-closed-episode-1-special-visualIt’s not hard to believe that we’re hitting the 20th anniversary of the Detective Conan/Case Closed property and it looks like there’s going to be quite the special to help celebrate it. With plans for a winter special that will have a two-hour running time, commercials included, the first episode of the series is being newly animated and told to bring it into the modern side. The special will have some different staff than the TV series working on it with original creator Gosho Aoyama overseeing it. The project has Yasuichiro Yamamoto as the director and working on the script with Hiroshi Kashiwabara. Masatomo Sudo is back as the character designer for it and TMS/V1 Studio will be handling the animation. No exact date for it has been revealed yet.

The plan is for it to retell the opening episode with new material to expand it and more.

The TV series is being simulcast by Crunchyroll and Funimation released some of the show on DVD several years ago. Viz Media continues to bring out the manga.

Property concept: Shinichi Kudou, a great mystery expert at only seventeen, is already well known for having solved several challenging cases. One day, when Shinichi sees two suspicious men and decides to follow them, he inadvertently becomes witness to a disturbing illegal activity. When the men catch Shinichi, they dose him with an experimental drug formulated by their criminal organization and abandon him to die. However, to his own astonishment, Shinichi is still alive and soon wakes up, but now, he has the body of a seven-year-old, perfectly preserving his original intelligence. He hides his real identity from everyone, including his childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, private detective Kogorou Mouri, and takes on the alias of Conan Edogawa (inspired by the mystery writers Arthur Conan Doyle and Ranpo Edogawa).
