Warner Brothers Japan have posted new preview videos for the second anime season of Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma as well as a special OVA that will be packaged with the manga’s 19th volume in Japan, scheduled to be released in July. The second season, titled Shokugeki no Souma: Ni no Sara (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma: The Second Plate) will also appear in July at the start of the summer broadcast season.
The first anime season aired for 24 episodes from May to September 2015. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan and Sentai Filmworks licensed it for North America.
The second season will pick up right where the first ended, as the Autumn Elections move into the seminfinals. At the end of the video, it is confirmed that the main cast and staff will be returning for the second season, with director Yoshitomo Yonetani and series composition (head writer) Shogo Yasukawa again overseeing the show at animation studio JC Staff. Character designs are again in the hands of Tomoyuki Shitaya, with music by Tatsuya Katou and Jin Aketagawa as sound director. Returning cast members include Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Soma Yukihira, Risa Taneda as Erina Nakiri, Minami Takahashi as Megumi Tadokoro, Junichi Suwabe as Akira Hayama, Nobuhiko Okamoto as Ryou Kurokiba, Natsuki Hanae as Takumi Aldini, Saori Ōnishi as Hisako Arato, and Chinatsu Akasaki as Alice Nakiri.
Warner Japan also posted a promotional video for the upcoming OVA that will be included on a DVD as a limited edition extra with the 19th collected volume of Yuuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki’s manga. The normal length (25 minutes) extra episode will cover the short summer break that Soma and the others enjoyed before the Autumn Elections arc began. Expect swimsuits.
Sentai Filmworks has already picked up the North America release rights for the first season of the series on home video while Viz Media is releasing the manga in print and digital.
The first season of the TV series is directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani, and was animated at JC Staff with Shogko Yasukawa handling the scripts and Tomoyuki Shitaya working on the character design adaptations. It starred Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Soma Yukihira, Risa Taneda as Erina Nakir, Minami Takahashi as Megumi Tadokoro, Ikumi Mito as Shizuka Ishigami, Maaya Uchida as Yūki Yoshino, Ai Kayano as Ryōko Sakaki, Taishi Murata as Shun Ibusaki, Yūsuke Kobayashi as Zenji Marui, Ai Kakuma as Mayumi Kurase, Rina Hidaka as Urara Kawashima, Banjo Ginga as Senzaemon Nakiri and Rikiya Koyama as Joichiro Yukihira.
The manga series is currently running in Weekly Shonen Jump by Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki with sixteen volumes to its name so far.
Plot concept: Soma Yukihira’s old man runs a small family restaurant in the less savory end of town. Aiming to one day surpass his father’s culinary prowess, Soma hones his skills day in and day out until one day, out of the blue, his father decides to enroll Soma in a classy culinary school!
Can Soma really cut it in a place that prides itself on a 10 percent graduation rate? And can he convince the beautiful, domineering heiress to the school that he belongs there at all?!
