While Christopher McQuarrie is certainly a strong writer in his own right and definitely getting attention for his directorial work on the recent Mission: Impossible feature, he’s still considered one of the best “script doctors” out there that helps out on a number of projects. The upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story film has seen the usual progression of writers, first with Gary Whitta doing the structure and firming things up and then Chris Weitz on to flesh it out and expand upon it. We learned previously that McQuarrie did some minor work on it supposedly, but now it’s coming across more that he “saved” the project when he came on to put things in proper working order. What those things are aren’t clear, but with the film working as a heist film one can imagine he was able to smooth a lot of wrinkles out.
It’ll also be interesting to see how the film is received once the marketing for it gets underway since a lot of non-hardcore fans will be expecting the next film to continue The Force Awakens as opposed to going back to a time just before A New Hope.
Set to debut on December 16th, 2016, the film is directed by Gareth Edwards based on a screenplay by Chris Weitz. The film stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Riz Ahmed.
Plot concept: A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans.
