Digging into the past is a common enough story element and kind of necessary to explain where the Doamayger-D came from. It can slow down the narrative a bit though and even more so in a short-form series since it’s the totality of the episode. With this one, we get to see more of Daijirou’s grandfather and how things came together for the giant robot but also why things were put away for so long. With its confectionary skill, the robot is fantastic but it lacks the ability to connect with customers while allowing the operator to get far too smug. It’s something that makes sense in that personal pride side of it, but it’s also the simplistic side as well, especially since said grandfather is hoping that Daijrou can make things work where he couldn’t.

In Summary:
The second backstory episode of the series works much as the first but compounds the whole slowing down of things even more. It’s not a bad story and it’s one that fits within the context of what’s going on. And amid a longer episode it wouldn’t even be noticeable. But it just stands out so much here as a drag on the energy and fun of the show that it simply doesn’t click all that well, especially as we go into the final stretch of the show.
