What They Say:
When a meteor carrying the Zombie virus hits Earth, it triggers the potential end of mankind. The last chance for humanity is a spacecraft full of alien scientists tasked with tracking the interstellar virus; one that has wiped out many other planets. What will happen when humans must team with aliens to survive the zombie apocalypse?

Content (please note that portions of a review may contain spoilers):
While Nova, Colt and her team attempt to retrieve the remainder of the equipment, the other part of the crew are confronted by the ignorance of the human race: one group wanting to better their side by taking what they want. The dregs Colt left behind attempt to hold the weaker humans hostage to force the aliens to relinquish their technology, but are soon overpowered by superior tactics; once they are subdued, the survivors race to meet their captain, leaving the bikers to fend for themselves. However, they soon see that the plague has overwhelmed their commander and with a timely assist, the area is cleansed of the zombie horde.

As the crew regroups, the haste to return to Nova’s side is met by their mercy to spare the wayward humans. The greedy gang ambushes the exhausted defenders and they attempt to secure a way for their own survival. Not caring for anyone but themselves, they hastily withdrawal, not noticing that they have once again been outflanked. After his friends are suppressed, the lone gunman flees with the essential satellite dish but is soon massacred by a hungry ghoul. With the last of the rebellious squad quelled, the saviours try to make their way to the crash site, but are soon trapped within the blocked remains of the subway tunnels.

In Summary:
There is always entrapment scenario in this type of survival story, but when writer Joe Brusha created a new twist with the cruiser flying in at the last second to save Nova and the team, it adds a great action flare instead of the rescue squad coming in with guns blazing – we get lasers and big explosions! Who would not love this in the fatal moment? But the betrayal scene and the ultimatum when the leader is attacked from behind – those are cliché since we also see those in every blockbuster movie. However, it does fit in with the rest of the series, so while it doesn’t have much of an impact, they were expected.

Thus, it is within an issue like this that Vincenzo Riccardi’s illustrations bring the story to its fevered pitched frenzy. The way he evokes feelings with each panel, whether it be a coward holding a shotgun to a girl’s head, a saucer swooping in or a zombie taking a bite out of someone, those appropriate emotions are stirred within your core just by watching the advancement of every frame. You don’t words to interpret the atmosphere – they are graphically presented in his beautiful line work. A movie for the eyes and a treat for the imagination.

We only have one more issue left in this mini-series, and the team still has a long way to go until the end. How will the team of Brusha and Riccardi be able to pull this off? They still need to get to the crash site, but now the crew is trapped in a dead end subway tunnel. Just hope it doesn’t end too abruptly … or predictably. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
