Netflix CEO Reed Hasting Talks Anime

In a pretty solidly engaging interview session overall at the DealBook conference this weekend, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings talks a lot about content, production of it and the overall ecosystem that exists and has changed so much in the past fifteen years.
Within that, in a very small nugget, is the nod from Hastings that, over time, they will likely produce some anime content. This is essentially a given considering the company has recently set up shop in Japan back in September and have expanded with a great deal of pre-existing content. The move to co-producing and being on committees as they invest in local content producers for original works will happen, which we’ve talked about in the past. Netflix has secured a few deals already for content to be exclusive through them for a duration at least, initially with the first two seasons of Knights of Sidonia and most recently with The Seven Deadly Sins. They’ll be doing this again early next year with Ajin – Demi Human.
As for what content they could produce, it’s certain that there are studios that are always looking not only for new investors that will have these conversations with Netflix but also the desire to have their material available worldwide in a pretty controlled form. What those original works will be remains to be seen. But seeing how well they’ve done with The Seven Deadly Sins in terms of options, there’s a lot of potential there.
