‘Gate: The Self-Defense Forces Fight Like This in Another Land’ Gets Second Anime Cour in January

2 min read

Gate HeaderThe twelfth and final episode of the summer season of Gate: The Self-Defense Forces Fight Like This in Another Land has provided some welcome information for fans in that a second cour will be coming in January 2016. No details are available about it at the moment beyond that it will cover the Flame Dragon arc from the original light novels. It’s expected naturally that the same production team and cast will return for the new season and we also expect that Crunchyroll will have it and that Sentai Filmworks will grab these rights as well.

While there are some nods towards this originally being a two-cour series, most believed it to be a single cour. None of the original announcements that I’ve seen (and written about) indicated a two-cour series nor did the various streaming/licensing nods. Either way, it’s welcome news for fans of the show that there will be more of this.

The anime adaptation of the light novel series from Takumi Yanai is currently being simulcast by Crunchyroll. The series has Takahiko Kyogoku directing it at A-1 Pictures based on the overall series composition by Tatsuhiko Urahata. Jun Nakai is on board to handle the character designs. The cast for the series includes Junichi Suwabe as Yōji Itami, Hisako Kanemoto as Tuka Luna Marso, Nao Tōyama as Lelei la Lelena, Risa Taneda as Rory Mercury, Haruka Tomatsu as Pina, Hiroki Yasumoto as Akira Tomita, Kaito Ishikawa as Takeo Kurata, Maaya Uchida as Shino Kurebayashi and Yōko Hikasa as Yao.

Plot concept: When a gate appears in Tokyo’s Ginza district sometime in the 21st century. From the gate pours out monsters, knights from middle-age Europe, and other fantasy-like beings, and they kill many of the citizens of Tokyo. This event is known as the Ginza Incident.

The government sends a small group of soldiers from the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to the alternate world beyond the gate. Led by otaku soldier Yōji, they find that the villages in the world are being attacked by a dragon. An elf girl who is a survivor from the dragon’s rampage joins the group in their travels across the dangerous new world.
