Miss Monochrome continues to build up a better second season that feels like it has more of a point to it all while still being weird and silly along the way. That’s been one of the things that has gotten me more invested in it, though it is still at its core a very simple show. What’s helped is that the cast has expanded well enough so that Monochrome has more to play off of and to become more quirky herself. And we do get some of that at the start here as we see how they’re showing off the new towels that they can sell which are branded and she jokes about the price being the equivalent of a house. The whole bit with the award she suddenly wins is just bizarre, however.

Where the episode focuses is on the concert that Yayoi is setting up for her as the song order is talked about, the raffle and a greater focus on the band itself. With Akiko on board, there’s a good push being made here and Akiko certainly sets the tone for it as she has to pick members for it. What’s amusing is that as she shows off by playing a bit, you can see how Monochrome sees herself being upstaged by Akiko’s ability. That ends up going in a hilarious direction as Akiko also ends up being discovered at the same time and goes on a whirlwind US tour, thereby freeing Monochrome up from any competition. It’s just simple and so weird at the same time – especially Monochrome’s minor rapping/DJ moment.

In Summary:
Miss Monochrome largely does what it’s been doing so far this season by being silly and weird while also a bit biting in some ways. Akiko is on the receiving end of it this time, though it works out better for her as a character than anything. That said, it doesn’t give us a good picture of Monochrome as a person – and as a performer – with how she deals with giving anyone else some time on stage. I have to say, that kind of chips away a decent bit at my interest in the character, which was pretty basic at best already.
