Miss Monochrome’s quest to get famous and achieve her larger goals certainly have their hiccups along the way and it’s good to see that the second season is mostly doing the same while expanding on it. The introduction of Yayoi as her publicist/promoter the last time around didn’t give us a chance to really get to know her but we certainly got a clue about her personality when she gets behind the wheel of a car. And we also get that she takes things to the next level quickly as a promoter. When Monochrome says they need to book some venues, she goes off and gets all the big places booked for the first live tour, not realizing that she went too big too quickly for the level that Monochrome is at.

The main gag that we get here is that Monochrome is being light with what she’s asking for while Yayoi takes it very seriously without understanding the scale. Monochrome even cracks a few gags along the way, which is fun. But as they get things settled and move forward, this allows the two women to finally talk a bit about what she wants to do for her performances. Which is complicated because she only knows cover songs as opposed to original works of her own. She’s so wide in her range and tastes that there’s no cohesion for her, even as a pop artist, which can unify the fans while reaching out to the wider audience. So that kicks off the next phase of building that first album, which is putting a band together. It only happens towards the end here, but we get our first taste of the first member with a young female guitarist that Monochrome basically acquires.

In Summary:
Miss Monochrome feels like it’s putting together a strong overall narrative for the season with what it wants to do and that’s giving it a better feeling in general. Working by building an actual group around Monochrome beyond Mateo, first with Yayoi and now introducing a guitarist, we can see her actually making progress with her goal and moving forward, something that didn’t feel like it was happening all that much before. It does do it in the way that this series works so it’s not exactly an in-depth work, but it works well within the context here and it’s fun to see Monochrome actually making a few jokes and whatnot along the way to change it up a little for her.
