City Hunter

Revealed earlier this spring in regards to the 30th anniversary of Tsukasa Hojo’s City Hunter manga beginning way back in 1985, new details have arrived regarding the special anime episode that will be bundled with those who buy the whole set that’s out next month. Termed a motion comic more than an OAD proper, the property, which kept chugging along until 1992 in Weekly Shonen Jump with a grand total of thirty-five volumes. is getting a twelve volume release on July 18th that includes new illustrations and interview material. Originally it looked like a new cast was stepping up to handle the work, but now the formal and familiar cast has been revealed:

  • Akira Kamiya as Ryo Saeba.
  • Kazue Ikura as Kaori Makimura.
  • Yōko Asagami as Saeko Nogami.
  • Tesshō Genda as Umibōzu.
  • And Bin Shimada as Doc.

The original work ended up spawning multiple TV adaptations, movies, live action and more. With the number of anime projects from the past resurfacing in the past few years, can City Hunter rise again? And will this new edition of the manga spur its potential release stateside?

Property concept: Ryo Saeba is a “sweeper” in the city of Tokyo. His works as a trouble shooter, cleaning the streets of vermin, and helping out desperate people. Sometimes he’s a bodyguard, sometimes he’s an assassin, whatever Ryo does he does it well. In fact his only flaw is his hormones – he loves the ladies and sometimes turns into an idiot when he’s near them. Thankfully he’s got people like his partner Kaori Makimura to keep him in check.
