Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: Robyn Hood #10 Review

3 min read

Robyn Hood Issue 10 CoverDo NOT want to make Robyn mad … or else!

Creative Staff:
Writers Pat Shand
Artwork Roberta Ingranata

What They Say:
For centuries, they have shaped the progress of New York City from the shadows. Their legacy is cloaked in mystery, with even the most connected in Manhattan unaware of what they truly represent. But now, the Cabal has released a deadly plague upon New York City, and Marian’s life is on the line.

Content (please note that portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The Plague continues to ravage Manhattan. Marian is sick and Robyn doesn’t know what to do. What other options does she have? Let her and everyone else die or swallow her stupid pride and go to the only ones who will have the answer – the Cabal?

Silly question. There is only one choice and Robyn doesn’t like it. But what does that matter? Marian is the only one who has been by her side, helped her no matter what the problem and stayed with her through thick or thin. Now it’s her turn to help her.

Of course, the only way in is through the front door. Not the smart way in, but as long as it gets the job done, who cares? Let them come, as long as it gets her to the boss – what does it matter? He’s got to have a cure, right?

Of course, there has to be some stupid thing blocking the way … and this time it’s Malec! Why does he always have to bring up that moronic Child of Darkness prophecy? What is he, obsessed with that thing? But if he can help Robyn, let him ramble on! All the better … as long as she gets the cure.

So the Cabal escapes, Marian is back and … the pair is being sued! What else could go wrong? Wait … don’t answer that!

In Summary:
This issue shows the main reason why the partnership between Robyn and Marian works so well – they depend on each other. And now we can see how Robyn would falls apart if it were not for her other half. Although she keeps her sardonic outlook, without someone grounding her, we can see how she’s reverting back to her old personality: crass and headstrong. With Shand’s brilliant writing and Ingranata’s darkly fluid artwork, this issue was a joy to read. It shows how much Robyn really cares for Marian, even if she won’t admit it out loud. Deep inside, she knows that her life would collapse if her friend wasn’t at her side. The one panel of her shedding tears made the whole story. If the text wasn’t there, the gist of the page would have conveyed those emotions; since Robyn always keeps her emotions bottled up, for her to cry made it all the more powerful!

The only problem I had was that the ending was a bit too neat. I know that Shand and Ingranata only have a certain number of pages for each issue, but to wrap The Plague storyline so cleanly, seemed too convenient. The Cabal will be back, but still, the illness is bound to have some side-effects, right? And now off to the New York Comic-Con? This should be … interesting! Marian is having a time adjusting to a normal life on Earth, but to expose her to the madness that is Comic-Con? Should be no problems at all, right?
