What They Say:
Grimoire | Magic Book

Based off of a light novel of the same name written by Fujino Omori and illustrated by Suzuhito Yasuda, Is It Wrong to Try and Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is set in the world of Orario, where adventurers band together and look for treasures in an underground labyrinth known as Dungeon. However, for Bell Cranel, fame and riches are secondary to what he wants to find the most: girls. He soon finds out though, that anything can happen in Dungeon, and winds up being the damsel in distress instead!

Hestia is upset. She got far too little screen time in the last episode, and when she did it was only to see Bell get friendly (at least in her eyes) with some other girl. How dare those hussies? Neither was even the girl Bell was supposed to have been in love with in the first place. After drinking herself sick and pouting, Hestia is in no mood to be the peppy ribbon mascot the series needs, so Bell decides that it’s worth trying to invite her on a date. Hestia is instantly cured.

Although anime characters, especially in fantasy settings, rarely seem affected by wearing the same outfit in almost all situations (except dates, I guess), Hestia decides that she needs to wash up a bit before she can be properly presentable, and with the trend this show has been following, it would be strange to not have a bathhouse scene by now. Hestia bathes with a bevy of other goddesses, some similarly well-endowed, although even in the canon of the series she’s referred to as “Loli Big-Boobs” – appropriate given how exceedingly self-aware this series has been from the beginning. It’s also the case that this series can’t very well introduce new female characters without having them fall over Bell, this time specifically to see what Hestia sees in him. Although this has Bell suffocating in more cute goddesses than he can even process and then literally in the ample bosom of Demeter, the main goddess of this group, the escape from this onslaught takes up what would’ve been the date Hestia was looking forward to. Since the events at least didn’t paint Bell as the initiator and Hestia has always been considerably more understanding than many characters in her position, this doesn’t cause her to rebound, and things generally return to the status quo, even if Hestia didn’t get to enjoy herself as she was expecting to.

This time the story’s really about a book Bell happens to receive from Syr, giving him some trippy dreams upon reading. Hestia makes a discovery: suddenly, Bell has magic! Apparently Bell doesn’t understand his position as essentially a video game character quite enough to think of the limited mana resources he must have, and goes out firing his newfound magic attack until he finds himself far deeper into a dungeon than he intended to go. He doesn’t just stop being able to fire it after a while; he becomes fatigued to the point of passing out, giving Aiz another opportunity to save him and reveal that the first time was actually her fault, something which he only hears through the filter of another dream state. That was no ordinary book, Bell; it was a grimoire, one that belonged to someone else, that you used up, and that costs far more than you could pay for!

In Summary:
Bell is a silly guy. Even if he didn’t guess the significance of the book he came upon, he used his new magic far too irresponsibly. With some more substantial involvement from Hestia and other goddesses, at least it’s a fun time, and the next episode looks to deal with more serious matters.
