What They Say:
“The Law of Retrogression”

Erza is confronted by Minerva, who doesn’t mind that her opponent is in a weakened child form. Now Minerva belongs to a dark guild, Succubus Eye, and her partner faces off against Natsu, who has also been reverted to childlike form. And Sun Village with its giant residents is still supernaturally frozen over…

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The fight against the treasure hunters continues in full, but there’s some more complications with Succubus Eye showing up. Doriate, one of the members of Succubus Eye, has turned Erza and Natsu into children. As a result, their physical abilities are much weakened, they have much less magic, it takes much more magic to do anything, and it’s harder to adjust themselves to the suddenly smaller body. The concern is, of course, with whether Wendy is taller than Erza now though.

This episode introduced some interesting plot points, like how Erza is going to fight Minerva, an opponent that gave her trouble normal sized, as a child with no armor and a sword. Or whether Natsu is just going to keep on causing mischief to get away to the mysterious voice he hears. Moments like this are absolutely needed in Fairy Tail and keep the mood light when the inevitable fight for our friends is going to start up in full here soon probably.

There’s also another surprise appearance by Flare—formerly of Raven Tail, now of some mysterious guild—who saved Lucy and Wendy from a little jam. I don’t know what Flare’s deal is, but her appearance isn’t so welcome. If the show is going to have a random character appear for no apparent reason, why not have it be another Fairy Tail member? I can’t remember what happens from the manga, but this is likely redemption for Flare and I don’t know if she deserves that.

Wendy and Carla grace the ending. This is actually kind of creepy because she’s like 12, but also cute in that weird anime moe way. Anime is weird. I love the art on these end cards though.

In Summary:
The problem with these shonen adaptations is that they so closely follow the manga that each manga page has to be about 1.5 minutes of show. 1.5 minutes is a LONG TIME and it just makes these episodes drag until something really exciting happens. This wasn’t too bad in terms of content and moving everything forward, but god are things stretched out.
