Based off of a light novel of the same name written by Fujino Omori and illustrated by Suzuhito Yasuda, Is It Wrong to Try and Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is set in the world of Orario, where adventurers band together and look for treasures in an underground labyrinth known as Dungeon. However, for Bell Cranel, fame and riches are secondary to what he wants to find the most: girls. He soon finds out though, that anything can happen in Dungeon, and winds up being the damsel in distress instead!

In the week since this series began, the world has come to recognize the greatness of Hestia. That’s a beautiful thing, and the countless converts to the Holy Church of Hestia should feel even more blessed that the second episode not only continues the trend of featuring Hestia far more than any of the other girls (with Bell’s own target not appearing at all), but even features Hestia significantly more than Bell himself. I welcome this takeover by our new personal savior, and I hope you all do as well.
Did anything else happen in this episode? It’s hard to see past Hestia’s breasts and the fascinatingly impractical ribbon running underneath them, but there may have been a little more here and there. Primarily we get to meet a few more divine beings, all attractive women of course, and each with a different relationship to our true protagonist Hestia. One of the most familiar Norse gods, Loki, joins the cast as a particularly sexual character, one appearing much more adult than Hestia but also Breastia’s polar opposite in the way that she cares about most. Between their existing animosity and Hestia’s implications of pulling Aiz away from Loki, who already has… eyes… for her, the two go at each other for the endless entertainment of all those around them. Greek god Hephaestus/Hephaistos is also represented, his female counterpart carrying on his blacksmithing reputation, and while she’s not running a charity, she has a decent relationship with Hestia and agrees to forge a new weapon for the rapidly improving Bell. When all is said and done, Hestia enjoys as much of a date with Bell as can be expected from someone so undeserving of her, but when danger requiring the new weapon hits, Hestia misses the chance to pass the weapon on, and now it’s going to take her best efforts to get it to him in time.
That’s the kind of show we have here, and if any of this makes you roll your eyes too hard it might be wise to quit now. Legendary gods are depicted as sexualized moe girls who often want to take mortal fighters to bed, and they have silly catfights over these matters and, most importantly, their bust size. I’m not going to pretend that it’s any kind of high art, and it might be moving itself to the category of a guilty pleasure if it continues in the direction it’s gone so far, but it knows its audience and is quite adept at delivering exactly the production that fits their tastes. That might mean blatant, shameless pandering, but when it’s this open about it, it’s actually a little more refreshing than some.
In Summary:
If you’ve accepted Hestia as your personal lord (lady) and savior, this is the episode for you! It’s all Hestia all the time, and the rest of the cast featured operates almost entirely in service of her… service. Granted, her actions are just as much in service of male lead Bell’s pursuits, and between that and the fact that she’s constantly used as a device for sexual titillation it’s hard to step back and say this show is doing a great job, but it wants to be is dumb fun, and it succeeds.
