Asuka is the true main character of Fairy Tail.

What They Say:
“What the True Heart Spins”

Natsu babysits Asuka for an eventful day. For starters, she goes with Natsu and Lucy out on several jobs to make money so she can buy a certain item… but then it gets stolen by a pack of nefarious sky pirates who’ve been plaguing the town lately.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The filler shines yet again! Sure it was based on an omake, itself a sort of “filler” of the manga, but I loved every second of this episode. That was a rough few episodes with the end of the previous filler arc perhaps destroying my will to live, but here I stand writing the next week about the same show. I’m glad I stuck around.

In this episode, Natsu is tasked with babysitting Bisca and Alzack’s kid, Asuka, for the day while they go out on a job. What ensues is perhaps the most adorable thing to happen in Fairy Tail in quite some time. Natsu is forced to act like a horse, they do some jobs for Asuka’s sake, and the ending is one of the most touching things ever. It gets right at what’s right about kids. They pick up on the little things that parents give off and want to do something, but often don’t know how.

It works out here because that’s what Fairy Tail does. It makes things work out, by force if necessary (it is almost always necessary). She gets the snow globe back from the pawn shop, a sentimental thing from Bisca and Alzack’s past, with the help of Natsu. Natsu and Happy even kiss, unrelated. Who wouldn’t like this episode? Monsters!!

The ending theme plays over a slow pan up of Princess Hisui wearing a swimsuit. Stay classy Fairy Tail.

In Summary:
This is really all I want out of filler. Little characters like Asuka and Romeo bring the series to life in its quieter moments, not giant battles that make no sense. I want to see the rest of Fairy Tail. Have Mashima give you some background info, if he hasn’t already provided that in a guidebook, and run with it. Have fun with the other characters. Make more pairings besides Natsu, Lucy, and Happy. The pair of Erza and Lily was great and they had woefully little screen time! I want to see more experimentation in filler, not a retread of what’s already happened.

  1. Actually…this isnt filler. Its from an extra chapter in the manga as is next weeks episode. It was created by Mashima and thus canon. That explains WHY the episode was good bar the animation.

  2. Agreed. Its from a four issue one shot called Fairy Tail Festival. So the reason it was so much better was because it was actually written by Hiro Mashima.
