One of the series from the fall 2014 simulcast slate of shows that didn’t get picked up was Magic Kaito 1412, which was kind of unfortunate. The series is slotted for a twenty-four episode run and now Crunchyroll has managed to grab the rights for it and have started to get things rolling before the second half gets fully underway. The first four episodes are available now with as well as the eleventh and twelfth episodes. Two catalog episodes will be released each week at the simulcast time until they get caught up. The series is available to audiences in the US and Canada.
The cast for the show includes Kappei Yamaguchi in the title role, which is doubly amusing since he also plays the role of Shin’ichi Kudo in Detective Conan. Additionally, M.A.O. will be playing Aoko Nakamoriwhile Eri Kitamura will play Akako Koizumi. Mamoru Miyano has signed on for Saguru Hakuba as well.
The series comes from original manga creator Gosho Aoyoma and was a project he was working on before Detective Conan became a huge hit for him. The series is set for an October 2014 debut where new episodes will be broadcast in the time slot before Detective Conan, essentially making it Aoyoma Hour.
While he’s gone back to it at times over the years to work on the manga, there’s not a lot of material considering it began back in 1987. What has been done over the last few years though is that during breaks on the Detective Conan anime series is to do some Magic Kaito specials, which now number twelve and have been pulled together to a limited Blu-ray box set that will be limited and numbered to 1412 pieces, which ties into the series itself. The set is scheduled for a September 26th, 2014 release for – you guessed it – 14,120 yen.
Plot concept: Kaito Kuroba is a seventeen-year-old high school student who is an adept magician due to the influence of his father, Toichi Kuroba who died mysteriously. Finding Kid the Phantom Thief’s gadgets and costume in the room, Kaito dons the disguise and decides to confront Kid who has recently resurfaced after his eight years of absence. Kaito discovers Kid to be Konosuke Jii, his father’s butler, who ascertains Toichi was the first Kid the Phantom Thief. Jii reveals he took on the role as Kid to lure out Toichi’s murderer. Upon learning that his father was murdered, Kaito continues the role of Kid the Phantom Thief as he searches for his father’s killer.
