Rage Of Bahamut Episode 5
Running at the speed of plot…or a zombie rocket punch. Same thing really

Content(warning as portions of this review may contain spoilers):
Last week’s episode of Bahamut doubled down on the fun and brought out all the stops in being purely entertaining. It also doubled down on the story as well and offered a lot more development as to Favarro and Kaisar’s relationship, as well as the whole mystery concerning what the demons are after. This week continues doubling down on the latter except if last week was a speeding train, then this week’s episode pushes the plot to Mach 50, with a whole lot going on. Though where this would be fatal to other shows, Bahamut manages to cram  in a lot of big developments and still walk away with it’s usual swagger.

Before jumping back to where things left off, the episode starts with the gods and angels attempting to hold their own against Bahamut, who has started to revive. The scene isn’t much more than another pretty spectacle  but it does give a pretty clear indication of how high the stakes may get later on. Back with last week’s cliffhanger though, the situation raised the question of what Favarro’s next move would be. Given that his two biggest pains in the neck (as he later calls out himself) are pretty much out of his hair, he’s free to ride into the sunset and call it a day. However where his usual pragmatic attitude would kick in, a weird sense of heroism does instead and he goes with Rita to work out a rescue plan.

In the meantime, having been captured by the demons, Amara is being tortured for answers regarding who she stole the God Key for while Kaisar pleads for her safety. He’s still pretty convinced that Favarro is the one pulling the strings, and the demons get a good chuckle out of it before their leader Azeael decides to give him the actual lowdown on his situation. Kaisar is pretty shocked to learn what Amara actually is but he still thinks Favarro is to blame here and when Azeael learns what the connection between the two is, he recalls who their parents were and decides to use Kaisar’s grudge to his amusement.

On Favarro and Rita’s side of things, they go back to Bacchus to get a lead to where the others are. Bacchus is initially reluctant to lend his aid so he asks Favarro to show how determined he is about this which ends in Favarro destroying his magic bracelet, effectively ending his career as a bounty hunter. It’s enough to convince him, though when Bacchus asks what Favarro plans to do once everything’s over  Favarro doesn’t really seem too concerned. When they eventually make it to Sword Valley where the others are being held, Rita asks him why he’s going through all this trouble, and he says that he doesn’t really know himself. It feels a bit weird coming from him, especially given the stakes but it feels in character enough for him to do something on whim that it’s mostly easy to ignore how oddly heroic it is and just roll with it.

The rescue itself though takes a pretty quick turn for the worst when Kaisar attacks Favarro on sight, determined to get his revenge. Favarro tries to reason that it’s not the right time for that but he’s so obsessed at this point that it takes a slap to the face (or more accurately a zombie arm rocket punch to the face) from Rita to get him to calm down. Favarro and Kaisar agree to settle the score later, but things take another turn when the Orleans Knights show up to run interference on the demons. Azael tries to take back Amara in the heat of things but fails before making his escape. More interestingly though, Favarro seems to recognize him from his father’s demise and the episode ends on one of the knights holding a trinket that has a certain relation to Amara, suggesting he might be her missing dad.

In Summary:
A whole lot of development goes down this week but the show sucessfully manages to choke it all down without losing steam. Favarro’s change of heart feels a bit strange but certainly not enough to kill his character and it’ll be fun to see where he goes now that he’s a bit more heroic for the time being. Everything’s starting to connect together pretty nicely and while hopefully the next episode is a bit more focused on the fun, getting a lot of story’s not so bad.
