Robert Downey Jr. Negotiating For ‘Captain America 3’ Role

2 min read

Captain America Iron Man UltronThings are afoot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a pretty interesting way when you get down to it and there’s a lot of little tidbits floating out there about how it could all unfold as part of the next seven year plan that Marvel Studios has post-Avengers: Age of Ultron. Currently, Robert Downey Jr. is in negotiations to take on a sizable role in Captain America 3, which will serve as the launch pad for the Civil War storyline of sorts to permeate a number of upcoming films following that. The general idea seems to be that after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Tony Stark character sets the stage for superhuman registration so that things like Ultron don’t go down again, with Stark feeling pretty responsible for the carnage of it all.

The directors for the third film, the Russo Brothers who directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, are looking at taking on the third Avengers film that would deal with the fallout from this. It wouldn’t feature the same team as we know currently because of the sides taken, which also leads to Captain America working a new team. Suffice to say, they’re throwing a lot of balls in the air for fans to follow, but it shows the overall growth pattern of the franchises and the intent to not rely solely on core characters, which is welcome. It also shuffles off the Thanos storyline a bit and lets that build on its own potentially out in the Guardians of the Galaxy territory.

Combine this with potential interactions with Sony over the use of the Spider-man character and other things that are going on and you can see a sprawling series of changes ahead that keeps it from being the same kinds of film over and over, though with the core aspects that do draw people to it. The folks at Badass Digest talk about how the potential new team that Cap leads would include Falcon, War Machine, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Black Widow, as well as probably The Vision. Which could raise the profile of all characters in a way that Guardians of the Galaxy did as well. Using Cap as the hook and spinning these characters into leading roles offers its own host of possibilities.
