“Remember when anime was painted with ink and blood/sweat/tears? We do. It ruled. This is a sterling example…”

So says Siren Visual in their announcement that they’ve acquired the Australian rights to Nadia: Secret of Blue Water. The pickup for this property, which saw release in the recent past in North America from Sentai Filmworks, is for the TV series only and is currently slated for DVD only with eight discs planned as a complete series release. They’re still talking about a Blu-ray set as a possibility, but they won’t know until next year whether they can. The DVD edition is slated for a January 2015 release.

Plot concept: It’s the end of the 19th century and a nerdy yet courageous young inventor crosses paths with an enigmatic young girl who carries with her an ancient jewel. Cue a slapstick villainous trio and a madman hell-bent on stealing the jewel and unraveling the mysteries of the Blue Water, restoring the Atlantean Empire and leading the world into the new century. Based on Jules Verne’s ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’, scored by Shiro Sagisu (who also worked on Neon Genesis Evangelion) and with eye-popping animation from the legendary GAINAX studios; we are very pleased to present this 90’s classic for the first time in Australia!
