The central theme of Takeuchi’s The Dirty Triangle can be found within its title. The book’s two major stories, “Prototype Apple” and “The Dirty Triangle” prominently feature characters stuck in the middle of off the wall love triangles. In each story, the main character has a chance to sample the goods of their potential mates before faced with the choice of favoring one or the other.
“The Dirty Triangle” presents Marika, a haughty, man-hating lesbian who only has eyes for her classmate Sohana. Marika’s advances are constantly spurned and not even the sight of her nubile body is enough to sway the other woman. While trying to flee, Sohana bumps into a boy named Seiji and declares him to be her “totally not faking it to escape” boyfriend. The sight upsets Marika and she proposes a sex contest to determine who is a better lover and life partner to Sohana. Marika’s plan backfires in the most spectacular fashion: Not only do Seiji and Sohana form a sexual relationship, but his accidental sticking of Marika during their bout in the school’s storage closet has shattered her perception of the male sex organ. The once head strong, passionate lover of women finds herself questioning her sexual identity. Sohana sees this as an opportunity to “cure” her lesbian tendencies and set her up with Seiji that almost goes disastrously wrong. It’s worth pointing out that Sohana does this to halt Marika’s unwanted sexual advances as opposed to seeing her homosexuality as wrong and something of. “The Dirty Triangle” ends with Marika no closer to Sohana and despite enjoying sex with Seiji, her resolve to capture the other woman’s heart remains unchanged. Be sure to stick around for the story’s final moments. Who knew surprise futanari could be so hilarious?
“Protoype Apple,” which is actually the first story story in Takeuchi’s collection, is more than a little bonkers. Kyosuke, a thoroughly unrepentant pervert, is the son of a sex toy developer. He spends his time at home furiously masturbating to porn with the tools and toys from his dad’s company. Onaholes, blow up dolls, even the female names given to each hand are not enough to bring him to new heights of pleasure. All that changes when his father’s latest creation, a fully functioning robot designed for sex. When Apple arrives on the scene, “Protoype Apple” becomes a near parody of Chobits. Fresh off the assembly line, Apple is wired for sex but doesn’t know to properly please a man, leaving Kyosuke and his porno material to educate her. While Kyosuke enjoys sex with his new robot, he is emotionally cold towards Apple initially because he can’t see her as anything more than a robot. However, it isn’t long before he develops feelings for the machine. Kyosuke’s sexual bliss is interrupted by the appearance of Ringo, a girl he knew from school. When he realizes that Ringo and Apple look identical, his love life is turned completely upside down as he is put in the position to choose between a woman and a machine.
Rounding out the manga is “Angelic Reaper Izayoi,” a fun one shot story involving a fresh on the job demon is sent to claim her first soul. What is supposed to be a simple pickup job involving a young man ready to kill himself over debt turns is ruined by Izayoi’s experience and caring attitude, traits that inevitably leads to some pretty great booby sex. It lacks originality (how many animes operate on the same premise?) but its a great way to close out a fun book.
Two stories involving love triangles means plenty of opportunities for sexual activity. The Dirty Triangle doesn’t hold back and makes great use of its characters for some fun and enjoyable match ups. Takeuchi’s artwork is clean, if a little plain, and while Project-H’s website declares the book to be 100% uncensored, that isn’t necessarily true. The book’s colorized intro is completely free of censor bars and glowing, penis shaped shafts of light, but the black bars are present for all three stories. Small and conservative, these bars do not fully cover the anatomically correct naughty bits which leave very little to the imagination, especially during the numerous close-up shots.
In Summary
Hentai fans hungry for the the emotional and sexual complications of love triangles are sure to enjoy what Takeuchi has to offer. Some of the situations toe the line of ridiculousness, but when the sex starts it is easy enough to forgive. While “Protoype Apple” was the most emotionally engaging story of the pair, “The Dirty Triangle” nearly wins out for the comedic situations Marika tends to put herself in. The only misgiving I have about the entire work are its cop out endings, in which the drama of having to choose a woman is swept aside in favor of having both. Still, this is porn and as such, expecting the protagonist to walk away with only one mate is a little naive.
