Fairy Tail Series 2 Episode 19

The fate of the world’s in the hands of some ruffians.

What They Say:
“Zirconis’s Magic”

Seven dragons came through the Eclipse portal before it was closed… but now one of them drops dozens of eggs that hatch immediately! Plus: Sabertooth turns a new leaf! Cobra fights on the side of good?! And Zirconis uses magic to make clothes disappear, which proves to be particularly embarrassing for Lucy!

I remember watching Flowers of Evil and thinking the pace was really slow in that show. It worked, though. It’s pacing was slow, yet deliberate. Fairy Tail’s pacing is slow in this second series, yet it hurts the show in so many ways.

Too much time is spent on the unnecessary and, essentially, one thing happens this episode and that’s Lucy finding Future Lucy’s notebook. Everything else is a middle step. Battles are continuing, but not starting—or barely starting at all. I wonder again what the point is, but it seems like every third episode is the good one at this point.

It doesn’t help that this arc suffers from a lot of contrivances. Its very premise of dragons coming through the portal is believable enough, but information isn’t given until too late and even some plot points stretch believability. Alas, I’ve tread that ground before and don’t wish to again.

The moments we do get are good enough. There’s a small line between Gajeel and Levi and Elfman and Evergreen that is absolutely sweet and you can’t help but like it. It’s a subtle moment that you don’t get too often in Fairy Tail, a show full of over-the-top shonen action.

In Summary:
I regret to only see this episode for what it is: filler. The worst kind of filler too. The kind you can’t skip if you’re marathoning and haven’t seen it ever. The kind that puts in some stupid crap in the middle because it needs some padding. Let me say this: Fairy Tail doesn’t need padding. If you do two chapters per episode every so often (like for this episode), it won’t hurt. It won’t catch up to the manga, which I assume they’re horrified of. They saw what happened to Bleach when it was full of too much filler. Oh well. It is what it is.
