While a lot of the older Bandai Entertainment titles generate attention, one more than almost any other gets a lot of anticipation. Acquired pretty much a year ago exactly at Otakon 2013, FUNimation has finally revealed their plans for Cowboy Bebop. The show will arrive in December 2014, exact date to come soon, and there will be four ways to purchase it:

  1. DVD standard edition
  2. Blu-ray standard edition
  3. Amazon Exclusive BD/DVD Premium Edition
  4. FUNimation.com Exclusive BD/DVD Premium Edition

The two Premium Editions will each feature different packaging and premium items, but their precise details will be announced later.

Retailer exclusives are pretty divisive among fans with there always being a contingent that feels left out and that they couldn’t get anything. They are fairly common in Japan though where multiple retailers have different first press/limited edition items. The vast majority of the time, these are specialty goods rather than disc/show video bonus items, which is what went south with Paramount when they released Star Trek Into Darkness and has the featurettes spread across multiple retailers so a fan couldn’t get them all without buying multiple editions of the series. I don’t believe we’ll have that issue here, but fans will end up having to make a choice based on what particular pack-in goods are included.

Plot concept: Explore the far reaches of the galaxy in this undeniably hip series that inspired a generation – and redefined anime as an indisputable art form.

The Bebop crew is just trying to make a buck. This motely lot of intergalactic loners teams up to track down fugitives and turn them in for cold hard cash. Spike is a hero whose cool façade hides a dark and deadly past. The pilot Jet is a bruiser of a brute who can’t wait to collect the next bounty. Faye Valentine is a femme fatale prone to breaking hearts and separating fools from their money. Along for the ride are the brilliant, but weird, hacker Ed and a super-genius Welsh Corgi named Ein. On their own, any one of them is likely to get lost in the sprawl of space, but together, they’re they most entertaining gang of bounty hunters in the year 2071.
