Alexandre Aja is out doing press for his latest film with Horns, which stars Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame, and there’s always someone in the pool of journalists that remembers projects from a few years ago to ask about. After Aja had success with his 2010 film Piranha 3D, he said he was working towards making a Space Adventure Cobra live action movie. That’s a big project in itself, but with the way science fiction films were making a come back and now we’re seeing a little more space opera, it certainly fit into the overall trend. When asked about the status of the film, according to Cinema Blend, he said, “It’s a huge, huge project. Super expensive. Like $150 million-plus. It can only be done with a major movie star and most of them are not available for like five years. So we’re still working and trying to make it happen.”
Aja currently owns the rights to the live action film and has produced a couple of scripts for it so far with Gregory Levasseur and has a few producers lined up, but are looking at how best to bring the budget down while still making it a tent pole sized live action franchise.
Right Stuf has released the full TV original 80’s TV series in North America and Discotek Media has released the 1982 movie.
Check out the concept artwork that was done a couple years back by his team:
Original concept: Seeking reprieve from a painfully ordinary 9-to-5 existence, mild-mannered office worker Johnson visits the TM Corporation, a company that sells virtual dreams.
In Johnson’s dream adventure, he’s the notorious space pirate Cobra! Accompanied by his android partner Lady Armaroid, Cobra fights the lowlife scum of the Pirate Guild by day and saves sultry sirens of space by night. After the journey is over, events unfold that bring reality into focus. His experience wasn’t a dream at all – it was a reawakening of his buried past!
With the most feared weapon in the universe, the Psycho Gun, Cobra sets out into the galaxy in pursuit of love, fortune and fame!
