Zombie Tramp #1 Review

Zombie Tramp Issue 1
Zombie Tramp Issue 1
Will this zombie tale slake your appetite for gore?

Creative Staff:
Story: Dan Mendoza
Art: TMChu

What They Say:
Janey, our buxom belle of ill repute, has found herself at the toothy end of a zombie. The attack left her irrevocably changed, replacing her hunger for cash for something a tad more living. With a taste for flesh and a chip on her shoulder, Janey has a golden opportunity to seek revenge against the world that wronged her.

Content:
Dan Mendoza, the original writer of Zombie Tramp, has returned to continue his work. Being a re-launched series from 2013, there is a fair amount of information you need going into the book. Yes, a zombified john bit her, but why does she have a copy of the Necronomicon? Why is she so dead-set (pun intended) on continuing a rage-bender through the bowls of the underworld? While her motivations aren’t unbelievable, they’re not reinforced in the pages of this first issue.

The art of TMChu is this book’s greatest asset. His style, being somewhat reminiscent of Japanese animation, gives characters a unique appearance on the page. Giving women large, dough eyes and impossible measurements. While the paneling rarely strays from the norm, the individual pieces are strong, and the comic flows neatly with no on-page confusion.

Zombie Tramp’s biggest draw may be the one aspect that pushes me away. Not everyone is looking for a traditional comic, and some may enjoy Zombie Tramp for its unconventional look at the genre, but it lacks the ingredients of a good story. To the uninitiated, they may find Janey to be an impossibly proportioned sex object, whose only goal is to get into vaguely erotic situations and rip her way out. What seems like an attempt to create a powerful female character falls flat, resulting in an over-sexualized murder machine.
