Original ‘Aika’ Anime Series Begins Bilingual Hulu Distribution

2 min read

AikaAfter bringing out the shorter sequel series the other day, Bandai Visual has graced Hulu with one of the more enjoyable silly fanservice action shows of years gone by with Aika. The seven episode series is now available in both English and Japanese form while the Japanese language side also gets the special that was produced that’s filled with music videos, promos and some other behind the scenes material. The series was directed by Katsuhiko Nishihima at Studio Fantasia back in 1997 which played up the super spy and fanservice angle in a huge way that largely provided a very fun approach to it all. It was originally licensed, dubbed and released by Central Park Media and then Bandai Entertainment acquired in 2008 along with the release of the new sequel series, Aika R-16: Virgin Mission.

Plot concept: Tokyo has sunk into the ocean, along with most of the world, during a large-scale land subsidence. Aika Sumeragi is a salvager who works for a small company run by a father and daughter tandem. Alas, the company isn’t exactly successful, and money is needed desperately. Thus, Aika accepts the very dangerous job of acquiring an artifact called Lagu for a hefty sum. The boss’ daughter Rion joins Aika on this particular mission, and the two set off.
