Welcome back to Star Wars Thursday, a celebration of the wonderful and often wacky world of a galaxy far, far away.
There is a long tradition of service in the Star Wars fandom. The Force for Change campaign is still running, in which fans can help by donating to Unicef Innovation Labs. The Star Wars in the Classroom project reminds fans to “Serve Like a Jedi” during our numerous fun-filled Star Wars celebrations each year.
Leia is a wonderful example of service to others. Her dedication to the Rebellion is unquestioned, and she puts others before herself in all that she does. Lego Leia continued this tradition as she joined me on a major Boy Scout work day. We helped build a platform for birders to use to observe our feathered friends without damaging the local wetlands.
We began the day by digging holes for the footers that would keep the ramp stable. This was no easy task! Lego Leia was a bit disgruntled that she was considered “too small” to use the post hole digger. My aching arms can attest that she got off lucky, though. She did get to help use the level as we got the posts in place.
The nails we used to attach the boards were challenging for all. I stuck with it, because I know it’s what Lego Leia would want from me. The Boy Scouts on the work day were impressed with our fortitude, but not as impressed by the number of nails we bent a bit along the way. In our defense, they bent some too! Getting the smaller nails into place on this metal joint that connected the ramp to the main platform was definitely easier.
As the day progressed, we could begin to see the true shape of this project. We switched from hammers to drills as we screwed the flooring into place. Come on, you know you’d love to relax and take in this lovely view! My favorite part was watching some of the raptors swoop across the sky.
With a huge sigh of contentment, Lego Leia and I took a moment to enjoy the fruits of our labor. This is one amazing Eagle project.

Hey Maria. I work for the Boy Scouts and we really appreciate you teaching the Princess about Scout service. It makes you think that maybe when she said, “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi,” she might have been talking about a Scout project?
Thanks for the comment, Deron! I love the idea of Star Wars fans joining forces (yeah, I went there) to serve the community. Maybe the Scouts can participate in the next Serve Like a Jedi day?
