With the film pushed back at the end of last year from summer 2015 to July 1st, 2016, things are slowly but surely coming together for the Independence Day sequel for its 20th anniversary. Which is just a scary prospect in itself that it’s been twenty years. While Will Smith has declined to be involved in the project, others are returning to it as we’ve seen both Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum talking about it and some confirmations as well. The film is set to be directed once again by Roland Emmerich, who is in the midst of a small budget film called Stonewall at the moment, and producer Dean Devlin is back as well, both of whom did the initial draft before it went off to White House Down writer James Vanderbilt for additional work. So all the pieces are falling into place.

But now a new little twist has happened as 20th Century fox has added writer Carter Blanchard to the mix in order to do a new draft of the screenplay. Blanchard’s not a familiar name for most but he’s likely going to be a bit on the up and up the next few years with work on Kindergarten Heroes, an adaptation of the Mark Millar comic series, as well as having worked on the Spy Hunter screenplay.

With the film two years away, even with a big budget and special effects heavy piece, it’s not expected to begin filming until early next year, which leaves plenty of casting and other decisions to be made as the script tightens and firms up with Blanchard’s involvement.
