Kate Mara’s been signed on for the 2015 release of Fantastic Four for awhile now and in a new spread for Esquire Mexico, she touched upon the film a bit in the interview which, depending on how you want to read it, can pretty much undermine the confidence one might have in the film. With more and more films paying attention to the details and stories of the comics and more and more TV shows hewing closer to the source material, this one seems to be going out of its way – as a reboot no less – in trying to distance itself from the core works. Which, of course, helps to remove the existing fans from being cheerleaders and promoting it. It’s like they’re going the opposite approach of how Marvel is handling their films directly. Naturally, we’ll likely see some opinions change once more full details come out and the first trailer towards the end of the year, but with the disaster this film has been in terms of communication so far, it’s going to be a hard one to turnaround a bad perception with.
Q: How do you feel being the new Invisible Woman? It’s a big responsibility.
A: I don’t feel more responsibility with this role that I’ve felt with others. I understand that there are many fans of Fantastic Four and I guess they expect a lot from me, but I prefer not to be pressured by that. We are also trying to create a new way of seeing these superheroes, I’m focusing on making her (Susan Storm) as real as possible.
Q: Do you like comics?
A: I’ve never been a fan of comics, I’ve never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn’t necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn’t do it because the plot won’t be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions. The one fact is I am a fan of comic book movies, so it’s very exciting to be part of a movie like this.
Q: What did you think when the audition for this movie? Were you nervous?
A: I was excited, but I only focused on doing the best I could. I think there are roles you get if that’s what needs to happen. I kept everything in perspective although expected to stay with the paper, because the movie has great actors like Michael B. Jordan (who will be the Human Torch).
Directed by Josh Rank, the film stars Miles Teller for Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara for Invisible Girl, Michael B. Jordan for the Human Torch, and Jamie Bell for The Thing. The feature is due out on June 19th, 2015
It’s expected that Fox and Trank are working off of the Ultimate Fantastic Four concept, which has a different origin story than the 1960′s one. According to Wikipedia, “The origin of their powers is different and the team is much younger. The series revolves around the adventures of Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, and siblings Susan and Johnny Storm, who get engulfed in a malfunctioned teleporter experiment and get super powers: Reed can stretch, Susan projects force fields and makes herself invisible, Johnny becomes a human torch and Ben is a super strong stone giant. The series takes place in contemporary New York.”
