A new original anime feature film worked its way through production that was unveiled in April 2023 with Komada – A Whisky Family. The film from P.A. Works saw a November 2023 theatrical release in Japan and we’re not expecting a Japanese home video release until later this year as films like this tend to go almost a year between release and home video. The film saw another pickup I missed with Korean distributor Nova Media nabbing it. They set a January 2nd, 2025 release on DVD (via Yes Asia) priced at 26,99 €. It’s a single-disc release with Japanese and Korean dub options and Korean and English subtitles. Check out the packaging below
The film has Masayuki Yoshihara directing it from the screenplay by Yukito Kizawa and Munemasa Nakamoto. Tomomi Takada handled the character design concepts with Kousuke Kawazura adapting them. P.A. Works is handling the animation production.
The Japanese cast includes Saori Hayami as Rui Komada, Kensho Ono as Kōtarō Takahashi, Maaya Uchida as Tomoko Kawabata, Yoshimasa Hosoya as Yasumoto, Shinpachi Tsuji as Rindo Tokai, Kenichi Suzumura as Yūsuke Saitō, Kenyuu Horiuchi as Kō Komada, Kikuko Inoue as Miō Komada, and Yūichi Nakamura as Kei Komada.
Plot Concept: The film centers on Rui Komada, the young head of her ailing family whisky distillery. She took over the distillery after the death of her father. Facing financial difficulty, a divided family, and the aftermath of a natural disaster, Rui takes it upon herself to reforge her family’s bonds by reviving the family’s signature Japanese whisky.
