This weekend went about as one would expect as Bad Grandpa took first place with a $32 million take. The film, which had some of the funniest and most inappropriate trailers this year, certainly had the curiosity factor for many. It didn’t do as good as the last Jackass film, which was a 3D venture that netted $50 million, but the demographics here are showing to be more evenly split along gender lines and skewing quite a bit older, which will give this a bit more legs. The film knocked Gravity from its first place perch, and that film will drop more next weekend when Ender’s Game hits and soaks up both regular theaters, 3D and IMAX screens, but it’ll still hit around $250 million domestically by the end of its run.
The huge disappointment this weekend was the thoroughly star packed The Counselor, which gave us Ridley Scott directing and Cormac McCarthy writing. It wasn’t a terribly convoluted piece, but with a lack of a really clear and strong trailer, it didn’t grab audiences to get into it and those that did generally ranked it low, with a D rating via CinemaScore and 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s certainly going to be an acquired taste for many, though those that love particular dialogue and sense of style and pacing will flock to it.
