‘Gravity’ Secures Another Box Office Win

The past weekend at the box office continues to surprise in a lot of ways with what’s going on. Gravity managed to hold the first place position again with a decent but expected drop while still getting a lot of positive word of mouth. It’s also worth noting that it’s competing with the same audience type that comes out for Captain Phillips, so they’re siphoning off of each other a bit, but it’s also helping that there are no huge younger generation movies out so there’s a lot more adults hitting the theaters these days without feeling like they need to skip it due to something massive drawing in kids they don’t like to be around.

Of the new movies, it’s just pretty dismal all around. Carrie landed $17 million on a $30 million budget and is really surprising as there’s no other horror movies running at the moment, which is just very unusual since October tends to have a few on average. Escape Plan did pretty badly with $9.8 million with an unknown budget, which is the latest reminder that the 80’s icons just aren’t cutting it with either the older fans or the younger generation that has no interest. The Fifth Estate is now marking its position as the worst opener of the year with $1.7 million, which is half of what the summer bomb Paranoia did, and it’s got a $28 million budget with a solid player like Bill Condon directing and some very good actors, including Benedict Cumberbatch taking the lead. But the film is controversial in terms of content, but only amongst a subset of adults aware of it and that has not generated the right kind of publicity to draw people in to see it.
