Marvel Exploring ‘Agent Carter’ TV Series

The arrival next week of Agents of SHIELD definitely has a lot on the line for Disney when it comes to expanding past the movies and trying to further integrate the Marvel brand into a real, true mainstream experience. But like any company, they’re always looking ahead and they’ve seen how Marvel Studios has done that with the movies. The latest potential piece of the puzzle, which some places are saying is a given (which I disagree with), has Marvel & ABC looking at the idea of doing an Agent Carter TV series. The character, which starred in Captain America: The First Avenger and has received a lot of attention for the new Marvel One-Shot that’s produced for the Iron Man 3 release, would deal with events after the end of that movie and show us what happened to Agent Carter for the rest of World War II and potentially beyond. With an interesting array of characters that do exist in that time period, and the potential to draw in Hayley Atwell for a TV series, there’s a whole lot of potential there.

The initial problem that some have is that it’s another spy series. But that’s not exactly what Agents of SHIELD is and that isn’t exactly what Agent Carter would be either, as it could play more as a WWII period action/drama piece that could lay more interesting foundations out there – and some amusing connections with Agents of SHIELD as well. And for ABC, it would bring them back to something that was quite popular a decade or so ago with ALIAS, which launched Jennifer Garner into popularity.

Period pieces are always risky, but there are several that have hit well in the last couple of years and a popular property with a built-in fanbase that could expand well has Marvel hoping for a similar situation to Agent Coulson.
