While I certainly won’t call the movie fantastic, I still largely feel like a very small minority of the small number of people that saw R.I.P.D. that actually enjoyed it. With its streamlined runtime and quick movement without a lot of the usual fluff that just makes the movie longer without really adding anything, it was a solidly enjoyable summer diversion in August for me, enough so that I’ll likely pick up the 3D Blu-ray release. Jeff Bridges, who tends to work with small films, had a bit to say about it in a post-mortem:
“I had such a great time working on that movie. I remember what we were doing. I thought: This could be fun to see,” he said. “And when I saw it, I was a little underwhelmed. For my mind, the studio made some, uh, choices that I wouldn’t have made.”
Bridges also definitely knows that his career isn’t tied to this film and he’s had plenty of critics take him to task over the years for any number of things, but it’s interesting to see how he views the approach to the numbers and box office receipt experience.
“It’s kind of fun when the movie’s coming out. It’s like having a horse in the race. And they’re lining up, and they’re off!” he said of watching the box office. “And you’re rooting for your horse. And in this case, the jockey fell off the horse and you came in last. Ha ha ha. You know. That happens sometimes.”
