With the familiarity and comfort that comes from known properties, Toei’s updated 3DCG version of Captain Harlock certainly wasn’t a surprise when it was announced, and from the appearances we’ve had so far and this new three minute trailer, a lot of fans (but not all, of course) will be pretty pleased by this. The feature, a reworking of the original premise in film format, is set to debut in the fall of 2013 in Japan and is garnering plenty of overseas interest.
Plot concept: In the future, Mankind has achieved a vast starfaring civilization, but is slowly and steadily succumbing to ennui or despair, often due to defeat and subjugation by a foreign invader. Rising against the general apathy, Harlock denies defeat and leads an outlaw crew aboard his starship Arcadia to undertake daring raids against Earth’s oppressors. Their primary oppressors are the Mazone, a race of organic plant-based alien women who explored Earth in the mythic past and are now back to reclaim it.
