It’s been a bit on again off again lately when it comes to Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin as initially there was some imagery revealed about the manga being adapted into an anime series, and then came the denials just over a week ago. And now with the recent Sunrise conference out there, it appears that along with mentioning the new Tomino series, it’s also been confirmed that the Yoshikazu Yasuhiko manga adaptation of Tomino’s original series will be getting an anime adaptation in 2014 or 2015 as part of the 35th Anniversary project. Yasuhiko has been working on the series since 2001 and it completed in 2011 with twenty three volumes providing a different but familiar view of Tomino’s original series. Using this as a launch pad to go back to the original story through a new light in an anniversary period certainly makes a lot of sense since it will draw in the UC crowd but also hopefully bring more of a serious angle back for the Gundam properties for a bit.
Vertical has been releasing the manga in hardcover form in North America starting this past march and has five installments solicited through March of 2014 so far.
Plot Concept: Zeon ace pilot, Commander Char Aznable, thought he could foil the Federation’s plan to build a mobile suit by attacking their research base on colony Side 7. He was wrong. With a prototype already active, the besieged Federation forces strike back using their new weapon, the mobile suit Gundam, with devastating consequences. Amidst the fighting, young electronicswizard Amuro Ray is determined not to let his friends and family die in the crossfire. But what can one boy do to repel a squad of mobile suit-clad invaders?
