While it may not be the second coming of G-Gundam (where’s our Blu-ray release, already?!), Gundam Build Fighters may be the next best thing as we see Sunrise trying to change up the formula a bit. With 2014 being the 35th anniversary of Gundam, we’ve seen a lot of interpretations over the years and this one is obviously a bit younger skewing, but it also looks like it could just be a heck of a lot of fun and very well animated. Set for broadcast in October 2013, the series will be directed by Kenji Nagasaki (No. 6) and written by Yousuke Kuroda (Mobile Suit Gundam 00). The series, teased last month as the “1/144 Gundam Mobile” project, is tied to other things that Sunrise and Namco Bandai Games are doing this year as it figures in with the Gundam Breaker game and the Gundam GunPla model kits that are being done.

Series Concept: The story is set in the near future when GunPla Battles, competitions that pit Gundam plastic models against each other, have become popular worldwide in the “Second GunPla Boom.” Sei Iori, a first-year middle-school student and the only son of a model shop owner, is talented at building GunPla, but inexperienced in the GunPla Battles. He encounters a mysterious boy named Reiji who happens to be an accomplished Gundam Fighter. Together, they strive for the GunPla Battle world championships.
