You’d think swimsuits would improve any episode, but nope…

The Review:
The Banshin where robotic protectors for the deities of Earth – until a certain incident with Nyarko’s brother destroyed them all. The funding’s finally been found to rebuild them, though – a project that seems to please Nyarko no end. But before she can get too caught up in that, there’s a camping trip for Mahiro and his friends, which means barbeques, relaxation, a test of courage at a haunted house – and Nyarko and Kuuko trying to get a legover on him…
I have a confession to make: it took me three attempts to get through this episode, after falling asleep during the first two tries. And no, it wasn’t the fault of excessive partying the night before – it was just mostly the result of a complete lack of interest. This is not a good sign, especially when this week’s Nyarko-san was almost a back-to-basics, stick-to-the-fun-stuff kind of episode, which makes it all the harder to put my finger on why it didn’t seem to work.
I mean, crazy alien tech: check. Vacation high-jinks, including haunted house / test of courage: check. A mysterious effect that makes the girls horny (-er than usual) for Mahiro: check. Put all that together, and you get the sort of craziness that I’d normally be all for, but with the exception of a few Kuuko moments, I managed not a snigger, chuckle, or even smirk during the 25 minutes of the episode.
Part of the problem may be that this season of Nyarko-san has been so underwhelming that even when a decent episode does come along, it’s got to work twice as hard before I realise it. A little bit unfair on the episode, perhaps, but then if the series had actually been as funny as it seems to think it is, we wouldn’t have the problem…
In Summary:
One week to go, and then it’ll all be over. Hopefully if Nyarko & friends return for another season, they’ll have a rethink of what constitutes “funny” during the off-air season…
