With word coming out recently about Monster being pursued for a TV series being shopped with HBO with Guillermo Del Toro behind it, Hero Complex has a new three minute video interview with him as he’s out doing his press junkets for Pacific Rim. In it, Del Toro reveals that he was previously pursuing Domu from Katsuhiro Otomo but the deal fell through due to problems with the American lawyers not showing proper respect to the Japanese creators and individuals, which lead to it not going forward. It did, in the end, lead him to dealing with Naoki Urasawa and the deal that was made with him, which is definitely highly unusual in that he had to provide an entire seasons scripts and plans up from to Urawasawa. Del Toro goes into the importance of respect for Urasawa and the creators he deals with which definitely gives a lot of hope to how well the project could come out if it’s given the green light.

“You cannot compress ‘Monster’ into a feature,” Del Toro said, of the project he is co-writing with “Doctor Who” and “Sherlock” writer Steven Thompson. “‘Monster’ is almost like Chekhovian, it has all these little characters that are incredibly smart and delineated. Each of them has an arc and if you follow all of them, at the end of the last book you will be satisfied.”
