While the live action adaptation of Kite was sidelined for awhile previously after the death of its director, David R. Ellis, the film went on as production resumed earlier this winter with south African director Ralp Ziman taking over for him and the crew that wanted to see Ellis’ vision come to fruition. With production having wrapped on the movie adapted from the anime of the same name that was originally released back in 1998, news out of the Cannes festival is that the Weinstein Company has picked up worldwide distribution rights for the film which stars Samuel L. Jackson, India Eisley and Callan McAuliffe. The Weinstein Company is handling outside the U.S., South Africa and India.
Movie Concept: The update is described as a character-driven action film that charts the story of Sawa, a young woman living in a failed state after the financial collapse, where a corrupt security force profits on the trafficking of young women. When Sawa’s policeman father is killed, she vows to track the murderer down with the help of his ex-partner.
