Sometimes it seems like things just come together in the right way. On the same day that an interview we gave with the local paper that went back to how I got into anime, the folks at Kotaku reminded me that the series that got me into all of this is one of the more problematic ones out there. When a series like Rose of Versailles has finally been licensed, it continues to be a travesty that the Macross franchise has effectively been shut out for the last decade plus when it comes to getting the anime series out there. While we’ve had some luck in getting the original Macross series released, the rest are off limits because of legal issues that continue to plague one of the few properties that manages to do pretty well over the course of a couple of decades. Particularly with new games, novels and more being made.
So our question to fandom today is, if you can “rescue” just one of these properties for it to be released outside of Japan, which one would it be and why? My preference is for the Macross 7 run simply because it goes back to the characters I like and their offspring, but was the mysterious show that I’ve never gotten to see that was coming out closer to the original series than any other really.

I would really rescue all of Macross Frontier and 7 and also the Zero ova. And all of them would be released on Blu-ray.
As much as I love 7, the entire Frontier franchise, show and movies, is the one that would sell and Zero as a prequel to both Frontier and the original could get an easier release, since Zero in and of itself was never a really popular title in Japan. My vote goes to Frontier.
Does it have to be just one?
I would choose Macross Frontier, hands down, just so I can finally see for myself whether or not it lives up to the hype.
Also, why is the Macross: Do You Remember Love movie not listed here? That’s another title I’d like to see get a legitimate release (and a non-butchered, uncensored Blu-Ray release at that, unlike the one that surfaced in Japan last year).
The less said about Macross II, the better. End of story.
