The first box office weekend of November is here and it’s off to a weak start – though there’s still potential for it overall. With a weak tracking trend ahead of its debut, Terminator: Dark Fate barely managed to scrape past what Terminator: Genisys did back in 2015 by $2 million with its $29 million take domestically. And a “B+” CinemaScore from the fans that go in first isn’t a great sign either. And that the studio had already downgraded expectations to a $38 million debut? Oof. I love this property but at this point it’s no longer a viable film property.
It was enough to bump Joker down to second place with its $13 million take and it’s basically crossing the $300 million domestically, which continues to amuse me considering the number of people wrote this off as a bomb the minute it was announced.
Another new film this weekend was Harriet and that landed in fourth place with a $12 million take in half the locations of the top three films.
Motherless Brooklyn is definitely going the limited appeal route with a $3.6 million take for the Warner Bros. film. Meanwhile, Entertainment Studios’ launch of Arctic Dogs, which had super limited advertising that I think I saw a year or more ago for it, landed in tenth with a $3.1 million take.
Next weekend sees several films going wide. Universal has Last Christmas, Lionsgate goes for Midway, Warner Bros. with Doctor Sleep and Paramount with Playing with Fire. Well Go USA also has a wide release with Better Days. On the limited side, Argot Pictures has Mr. Toilet, Abramorama with The All Americans, Greenwich with The Kingmaker documentary, and Amazon with Honey Boy.
