Eureka 7: Astral Ocean Episode #15 Anime Review

3 min read

Never take a Secret into a populated place where it can be manipulated.

What They Say:
Ao feels the pressure of being the only IFO pilot with an operational Third Engine. With what Eureka said to him and the Japanese claiming to have communicated with a Secret, he also struggles with the idea that the Secrets may not be the enemy.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
After things went big for Ao when it came not only to Eureka and Nirvash but also with Nura, he’s now in a strange position overall for someone his age. Taking that factor into mind, with what Eureka has said, it’s easy to believe that any great number of people are lying to him about anything and everything. Don’t trust anyone over thirty takes on a new feeling in this way for him since so much has come up and he’s felt betrayed in so many ways that he can’t be sure of where he stands. All he does know is that he’s in a position of power to some degree because of what he’s gained with his IFO and the whole Third Engine part. But he’s also young enough to not know not to capitalize on it.

Ao’s time with Generation Bleu does continue on though as he really has nowhere else to go and they’re keen on running tests on him to make sure he’s okay. Things sort of settle into a bit of routine while we get an examination of the Secret that was gathered in Japan after the last incident, which leads us to more talking heads for the most part that go on about the mechanics and structure of it all. It adds some context, but it also feels so very tacked on in general. The same feeling comes with the brief bit of action that comes into play here as well, which puts Ao in an even more difficult position in the end. Visually, it all works well, especially with Truth staring down the Scub Coral instance and how the Secret is being taken advantage of in the middle of the city. It’s great visuals but once more leaves me feeling ever so empty with its actual content.

In Summary:
While the show picked up some steam when Eureka graced it with her presence, it also added more confusion for me on top of already not being really sure what the point of the show is. I’m committed to the end of its twenty-four episode run because I want to see the ties that bind it to the original series that come about, but every week leaves me feeling like it just doesn’t know what it wants to do. And it really does make me sad. With this episode, we get the fallout from the big moments recently and it shifts into more big moments but nothing really feels like it resonates since so much of the cast is just simply shallow at best. Especially when you have so many that go off camera for episodes at a time.
