The Green Lantern series has been moving its storyline along well this season but ramped things up recently. A lot of its initial focus after bringing Razer in was to show more of various worlds and exploring what the Green Lanterns are about. But recently it brought in more of the overall range, showcasing the Star Sapphire’s to very good effect, enhancing the past of the Guardian’s by talking about the Manhunters and how their actions essentially created the Red Lanterns be-cause of all the destruction they caused and then showing us a very strong series of attacks be-tween the two sides in the Forgotten Zone with Hal and the others going up against Atrocitus outright.

With Atrocitus now intent on making his move, what he needs to do is break free of the Forgotten Zone, which the Guardian’s think he’ll do by going through the Lighthouse, a bit of a complicated piece of technology that’s the easiest way out of the Zone, though one that you need codes in order to access. While there is a path to finding the code through some past encounters with it, the path in the present has them going back to the prison world where Hal and Kilowog have to get answers from a Thanagarian that’s prisoner there. Having long, long loved this particular group of aliens and warriors, seeing them come to life here is really enjoyable. There’s some fun dealings that have to go on in order to get the answers from Biff Rok because nothing is ever going to be easy for Hal or Kilowog.

As much fun as the whole Thanagarian fight match is that ensues, it goes up a few notches when a segment of the Red Lantern forces arrive to get the same information as well. Things go a little wonky when these varied forces are now here, especially as Rok plays quite a few sides to his own advantage. He’s an amusing sort of rogue here but also one that doesn’t quite grasp what it is he’s involved in to some degree. We get to see a lot of what he’s like through the events that play out here and as much as you don’t want to like him, he is pretty likable as well. The show does play with some fun little tricks to get things done, and does streamline things so as to not take too long, but the show has a very good flow overall and this episode covers a lot of ground while still dealing with a simple piece of the puzzle.

In Summary:
This episode does bring a lot of different things to the table, from Thangarian Hawkmen to the Red Lanterns and a look at what Atrocitus’ plan is all about. It does it with good action, both with rings and with hand to hand combat, while also sliding in the right kind of humor to keep it fun and light even in the face of serious adventures. Hal in particular gets some good lines here, especially the whole trust me angle, but even the silly stuff coming out of the warden works well even if it is kind of childish. In the end, everything moves forward here incrementally but not in a way that feels dragged out. I love the cast involved, the fun of Rok and the way there was manipulating going on all around in order to achieve the end goals. Very, very fun stuff once again.

Grade: B+
