Saint Seiya Omega Episode #01 Anime Review

3 min read

Based on the original manga by Masami Kurumada, Saint Seiya Omega comes to us courtesy of Toei Animation. In this new rendition of the series, Toei has decided that it was time for a semi-remake for a new set of fans. Given how old the franchise actually is, I believe that was a good idea. If they can pull it off.

What They Say:
Saints are champions of hope who have always appeared since the Age of Myth whenever evil threatens the world. They would clad themselves in armor called Cloths, and fight to protect Athena, the goddess who rules the world’s surface. Seiya the Pegasus Saint has saved Athena many times, and while he and his friends are Bronze Saints, which is the lowest rank, their battles have been passed down as legend.

The god of war and guardian of his namesake planet, Mars, was once sealed away by Seiya, but time has passed and his revival is at hand. Meanwhile, Saori Kido (Athena) is raising the boy Kouga, whose life Seiya saved, and he’s been training every day to become a Saint in order to prepare for the coming crisis… Unaware of his destiny, when Kouga awakens to the power of his Cosmo hidden inside him, the curtain will rise upon the legend of a new Saint!

As a fan, I’ve dipped my toes into the Saint Seiya franchise over the years, but I’ve never really followed it too closely. With this show being a reboot, I figured this was be a good place to jump in.

The show starts after the events of the original Saint Seiya series as the Goddess Athena (known as Saori) watches over and heals the world. At the start over the series, she is shown taking care of baby Kohga when she is attacked by Mars (the big, baddie who looks like he wears a suit made of the…Galaxy?!). She is saved by the hero of the first series, Seiya. This memory has become ingrained into Kohga and he has since been trained to become a Saint in order to protect Athena.

At 13 years old, Kohga wonders exactly why he is working so hard to become this “Saint.” He isn’t even sure that Athena exists. Even when he displays a highly destructive power called “Cosmo,” he ponders his fate. But when makes his return to take Athena away from him, Kohga finally mans up and becomes the Pegasus Saint. What happens from there? Tune in next time!

Saint Seiya Omega is certainly a nice show to look at. Crisp, clean visuals with a character design that mixes modern ans the classic look at the older adaptations. There is plenty of hair, it floats around in nice ways and Kohga can look a bit girly as times. The animation is nothing to write home about, but I was amused when planet altering powers get thrown around a bit (Pegasus Meteor Punch turns punches into meteors as the rate of 80 per second to start…). Finally, the characters are inoffensive, but Kohga can be a whiner.

I must warn you though, starts out cliché as hell. The set up hits all of the notes you would expect it to ending with a cliffhanger that has the hero getting ready to kick butt when we know the bad guy is going to smack him down. Why? Well, he has to find the other Saints! Duh! With that being said, I’m okay with that. I didn’t expect anything more or less. So, I have to admit to getting a little excited with the ending of the episode. It left me wanting more.

In Summary:
Saint Seiya Omega is a good entry point into the franchise for those who have never tried it out. It starts out a fairly good looking, albeit, cliched action show that does everything one would expect out of a show like this. Beat’em up fans should probably check it out. Everyone else may have a rough time buying into it.

  1. I was reviewing it, but I couldn’t keep up with it amid all the other simulcasts that were hitting. I keep hoping that it’ll get licensed so I can see it. 🙁

  2. This is crappy, it piss in everything Kuramada did, is like a Hollywood movie adaptation, just done in a Japanese cartoon. The cloths look nothing alike the older ones, what’s wrong with the huge box the past kids had to haul all over the place. It looks like fabric more than armor, and those attribute crap is annoying, needless in the Saint Seiya lore.
