Angel & Faith #6 Review

2 min read

“Defcon One, got it.”

What They Say:
A mysterious illness is plaguing the streets of London and turning everyday humans into emotionless killers. The Watcher’s Files, which may be the key to unraveling this mystery, have led Angel and Faith to seek out a demon from Giles’s past for answers. Meanwhile a peculiar friend and foe returns to London and to Angel’s inner circle.

The Review:
There is a new level of crazy in town. Non vamps are biting other humans, peaceful elderly members of retirement communities are being brutally attacked, and there is a cult like group following a vampire named Mother Superior. It’s all in a day’s work for Angel and Faith, though, right?

The issue is aptly named, as there are “daddy issues” galore. Giles, the ultimate father figure, features prominently with a well-executed flashback scene that shows part of his training as a Watcher. We learn about some of his own daddy issues, as well as gaining insight into his descent into his dark days as Ripper. I cheered when his flashback started up, as learning more about my favorite Watcher is one of the things I’m enjoying most about this series. I’ve read other comics where flashbacks scenes weigh down the plot, but this one was exciting and contributed to the overall feel of the story.

Angel experiences his own daddy issues apart from his desire to complete the tasks Giles has left undone. It’s been heavily teased, but the face from Angel’s past that joins the cast in this issue is one I was thrilled to see return. Is something different about her? I’m so excited about this new arrival, and I can’t wait to see where the story takes her. Not to be neglected, Faith has her own share of daddy troubles on the way. Her father is seeking her – but what does he want?

In Summary:
All of the stories and images are meshed together with great skill. The cuts back and forth flow well, blending into one another beautifully as well as moving each piece of the story along at a nice pace. My favorite part of the start of the issue is a nod to Hitchhiker’s Guide. I do love the pop culture references that always show up in the Buffyverse stories. With a new demon to chase and the ghosts of their past coming back into their lives, this really is a great place to jump into the fray. When you add in the fabulous flashback bringing new insights into the story of Giles’ past, it’s an issue not to be missed.
